FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota State University composition student Jonathon Erickson presented his Capstone Composer's Recital on October 17, 2025, in Beckwith Recital Hall, showcasing an evening of original music written during his studies in the Challey School of Music.
The recital featured eight compositions spanning a wide range of styles, instrumentations, and musical influences. Performed by fellow NDSU student musicians and collaborators, the program included works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and large-scale concert music, demonstrating the breadth of Erickson’s compositional development.
Among the featured works were Three Impractical Short Dances for clarinet, Titania and Oberon’s Waltz for flute, clarinet, and piano, Montecian Festival, The Treant’s March for bassoon and piano, The Emissary of Hope for mixed chamber ensemble, and a movement from his Symphony No. 1, At War’s End. The recital concluded with Umami, a work for clarinet choir.
Capstone recitals represent the culmination of a student’s undergraduate composition studies and provide an opportunity to present a substantial portfolio of original creative work in a public performance setting. The event highlighted the collaborative relationship between composers and performers that forms a central part of the composition curriculum at NDSU.
Erickson’s recital also reflects the continued growth of the NDSU composition program, which emphasizes the creation and performance of new music, interdisciplinary collaboration, and experiential learning through direct engagement with performers and ensembles.
